Let’s talk performance reviews. Some people don’t like these. It’s not the most fun topic for a lot of people. I think coaching, the way I like to think of it, is the coolest part about being a leader is developing others, and then, while trying to develop others, figuring out how much you’re really developing yourself. Because usually, what we do, at least I found I do, is we portray our own insecurities or weaknesses onto people as well. When we’re trying to fix other people, a lot of times, we’re almost actually fixing pieces of ourselves. While we’re coaching these people on our team and we’re supporting them in their careers and holding them accountable to their stated commitments and their objectives, one of the things I found is, we also have to do a good job managing ourselves, holding ourselves accountable, coaching ourselves up and reviewing. And one of the best ways to do that is through a standardized feedback program so that maybe, when you start a company, you’re small, you feel like everyone’s connected, everyone gets our culture, everyone’s getting feedback.
